AffinEco Leans Into Remote Training

Offerings are Robust, Cutting-Edge and Convenient

By Leigh Blander

AffinEco has always prided itself on providing extensive training for its workers. When COVID hit, the company moved much of its training online, utilizing a new Learning Management System (LMS) that lets workers get the important information they need in a safer way. Company managers say it has been a big success.

“We transitioned to a more robust, more comprehensive, and more easily-managed training system,” said Lou Gutierrez, a senior VP at AffinEco. “This new process is a 21st-century solution that is good for everybody.”

AffinEco’s 2,000+ employees can now access more than 100 training videos online, or work with supervisors to access them. The trainings, offered in English and Spanish, run between 15 minutes and two hours long.

The LMS features a range of training topics around cleaning and disinfecting. For example, because some AffinEco employees work cleaning healthcare facilities, they need to know how to safely manage blood-borne pathogens, in the event they come into contact with them

Electrical safety training is also important.

“Our workers use machines that disinfect by electrifying the air and particles. There’s special training on that,” said Hytmer Hernandez, senior hiring, training and compliance coordinator for AffinEco.

Other training topics include:

  • Hazard Communication
  • Asbestos Awareness
  • Slips & Falls Prevention
  • Back & Lifting Safety
  • Ladder Safety
  • Fire Emergency & Evacuation

They’re also offer training on sexual harassment prevention that complies with government requirements.

Gold Safety Award

The LMS training has been so successful that AffinEco has received the coveted Gold Safety Award from ConstructSecure, a risk-management software platform.

In a press release, ConstructSecure CEO Garrett Burke said, “AffinEco has done a remarkable job of implementing a strong safety management system. In addition to keeping employees safe, safety performance of this caliber should reduce their insurance premiums.”

The award is presented to companies that register a safety score between 85% to 95% in the ConstructSecure Safety Assessment Program.

“We brag about it with our employees, like when you win the Super Bowl,” Hernandez laughed. “We thank everybody for being part of that success.”

Convenience is Key

Hernandez said AffinEco employees and managers appreciate the convenience of the new LMS. “They can just click on it on their phones, laptops or tablets. It’s very user-friendly.”

Even as COVID recedes, AffinEco plans to keep the LMS platform for in-person training, utilizing skilled training coordinators as proctors.

“We’re looking forward to more face-to-face,” Gutierrez said. “We take great pride and ownership in this, and we do it with a dedication to our customers and to keep our employees safe.”
