By Leigh Blander

Rafphael Nunez Sanchez has worked with AffinEco for eight years, ever since he and his family arrived in the United States from Peru. He started as a custodian at the Jefferson School in Norwalk, Connecticut, and is now an area supervisor at the Weston Public Schools.

“I wish I could have five Rafphaels,” said Nunez’s boss Nelson Hernandez, AffinEco VP and Branch Manager. “He takes pride in everything he does. The guy is unbelievable.”

Nunez oversees 34 employees, many of whom he ferries from Stamford to the school building where they work in Weston every evening. Once their shift is over, he provides transportation for them back home.

“It’s not part of my job, but I do it because when it’s cold in winter I can’t just let them walk home from the bus stop,” he said.

Nunez works a long shift—starting with his 7:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. shift as a custodian at Purchase College. Then, he grabs a quick meal before beginning his night shift with AffinEco. Often, he doesn’t return home until 11:00 p.m. or later.

He takes time off from his job at the college during the summer to put in the extra hours necessary to get the Weston school buildings ready for the first day of classes in the fall.

“We have to do all the floors. It’s very stressful in the summer, there’s a lot of work to do,” he said.

Nunez, who is 49, lives in Stamford. He has a wife and two daughters, ages 21 and 17. On weekends, he says he likes to clean his own house and watch TV.

Asked what he likes most about working at AffinEco, Nunez answered, “I like the challenge. This is my first experience as a supervisor managing people. I like it very much.

“As long as AffinEco needs me, I’ll be here.”
